What Would Happen If You Stop Doing SEO For A Website?

As you probably already know, SEO is a long-term investment. If you’ve been spending a lot of time and resources on it for years, you may think it’s a good idea to take a break and maybe spend those resources on other types of digital marketing campaigns. And today I want to explain to you why that is a very bad idea.

What Happens If I Stop Publishing New Content?

If you stop publishing optimized content on your site, you are in danger of falling into this vicious circle :

  • You stop creating content for new search terms, so you appear in fewer searches and therefore attract less traffic.
  • Since you are no longer creating pages to link to, the number of inbound links decreases.
  • By having fewer new visitors, you’re also capturing fewer users for your re-marketing audiences and your database.
  • You no longer have the material to be able to create “centre pages“, which group different links around the same topic and which usually rank very well. Therefore, your positioning suffers even more.
  • You are no longer generating content that can be shared on social networks, so you generate less traffic from them.
  • By not seeing new content, users stop returning to your page and brand searches are reduced.

Ultimately, according to Search Engine Land, if you stop creating and publishing content, Google will assume that your website is not active and its position will begin to decline, creating inertia that is very difficult to reverse.

What Happens If I Stop Controlling The Technical Aspects?

The SEO is not only based on content creation but has a strong technical component. And unfortunately, this technical aspect involves associated maintenance. If you don’t, you face potential problems like:

  • Block your site with the robots.txt file and make Google crawlers inaccessible.
  • Generate duplicate content, with consequent positioning penalties.
  • Accidentally indexing pages that should be hidden from search engines, such as your test environment.
  • Cause type 404 errors (broken links) and excessive load times, with which the user experience suffers.

Think of the technical aspects of SEO as if it were a garden: if you don’t take care of it, weeds will start to grow everywhere and destroy what you’ve struggled so hard to achieve.

What Happens If I Stop Monitoring Inbound Links?

It is clear that you cannot neglect the SEO maintenance of your own page, both technically and in content. But you will also have to keep an eye on the incoming links that go to it from other pages.

If you stop monitoring incoming links, you will find that your website appears linked on spam sites. And since Google’s penalties for malicious links are tougher than ever, it’s not worth the risk.

So it’s imperative that you check inbound links at least once a month (or even once a week on high-traffic sites) and disavow non-authentic ones. Don’t let everything you’ve invested in SEO go to waste!
